Behind the Build: Creating a Custom Mudroom & Laundry Room from a Cluttered Garage in Worcester, MA

Home Improvement

At BB&R Design Build, we often get asked: Can a space that's barely functioning become one of the most used and loved parts of a home? Our answer is always yes, and this renovation proves it. What began as a cluttered garage and workspace is now a well-organized, custom mudroom and laundry combo that truly works for everyday life.

Starting Point: A Mudroom That Just Didn’t Work Anymore

Before construction began, this space functioned more like a storage unit than part of a home. The concrete floor was sloped, the washer and dryer were wedged into awkward spots, and there was no direct access to the kitchen. It wasn’t just outdated, it wasn’t really working at all.

What We Were Working With: The Challenges of the Old Space

  • A slab-on-grade mudroom with a sloped floor
  • Exposed utilities and a visible mini-split system
  • Outdated French doors that didn’t insulate well
  • No built-in storage or thoughtful layout
  • A laundry area that lacked cabinetry or flow
  • No interior door connecting to the main house

The After: A Clean, Bright, and Super Functional Custom Mudroom-Laundry Space

The transformation speaks for itself. With smart planning, quality craftsmanship, and custom details throughout, this space now serves as a hardworking transition area between the home and the outside world.

Left Side: Laundry Room Storage That Works

  • Built-in washer, dryer, and sink surrounded by sleek laundry room cabinets
  • Room to fold, store, and clean, all in one spot
  • Tight appliance fit executed with care, without sacrificing functionality

Right Side: A Mudroom Closet You’ll Actually Use

  • Tall cabinets for coats, cleaning gear, and seasonal items
  • A lighted closet rod that adds both convenience and a subtle touch of style
  • A bench with cubbies—perfect for organizing shoes, backpacks, and bags

Key Improvements on Mudroom and Laundry Room

New Double Doors

These new double doors provide direct access to the kitchen, making entry more convenient and efficient.

Modern Door Upgrade

The old French doors were replaced with a modern, energy-efficient option, complemented by a small roof overhang for added weather protection.

Herringbone Brick Flooring

Brick flooring laid in a classic herringbone pattern adds charm, durability, and allows for easy cleanup.

The Tough Stuff: Challenges We Had to Tackle Head-On

Every home renovation comes with a few curveballs, and this one was no exception. Here’s how we navigated them:

Plumbing

The slab foundation meant trenching and reworking underground plumbing—a big job, but critical for function.

Floor leveling

The sloped concrete required a pour-in-place leveler to create an even base for flooring and cabinetry.

Optimized Cabinet Design

To work around an electrical panel, we reconfigured cabinetry while still maximizing laundry room storage and functionality.

Precision Appliance Installation

With minimal space available, the washer and dryer were carefully measured and installed with exact precision to ensure a perfect fit.

Mid-Project Add-Ons: Foyer and Utility Room Get a Refresh Too

Midway through the build, the homeowners saw the momentum and decided to improve a few nearby areas as well. This led to additional work that included:

Foyer Renovation

The foyer was refreshed with new stairs, updated trim, and a fresh coat of paint for a welcoming first impression.

Utility Room Door Upgrade

The utility room door was replaced to align with the updated aesthetic and maintain a cohesive design throughout the space.

Wall Repairs

Patching and repairs were completed in adjacent rooms to ensure a smooth, cohesive look throughout the space.
